Getting started on your path to maintaining a healthy body with diabetes requires a team to work with you to set and achieve the goals of quality diabetes care.
Your health care provider has “medical” goals based on current research. These goals have been shown to prevent or reduce the risk of complications related to uncontrolled diabetes. They are called the “ABCs” of diabetes care.
· A1c (hemoglobin A1c) is maintained at 7% or lower
· Blood pressure is managed to target of 140/90 or lower
· Cholesterol is 200mg/dL or less and LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) is as low as possible.
You may have thought about setting behavior goals (maybe you are already practicing these goals). Behavior goals are usually addressed at any visit with diabetes educators and can include goals for food choices, physical activity, glucose monitoring, taking medications and/or managing stress.
Your health care team is an important part of your success in achieving all of your goals.
